Alligator Alcatraz: Trump’s Everglades Detention Camp Is a National Disgrace

Donald Trump’s latest stunt in immigration enforcement has arrived in the form of “Alligator Alcatraz,” a sprawling detention camp hastily erected in the heart of the Florida Everglades.

With a name that sounds more like a theme park attraction than a government facility, this new site is an alarming symbol of how far the administration is willing to go in its crusade against undocumented migrants.

A Remote Prison in the Swamps

Located at the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport, miles from civilization and surrounded by dangerous wetlands, the camp is as inhospitable as it gets.

The choice of location is no accident: the Everglades’ alligators, snakes, and isolation serve as natural barriers, making escape nearly impossible and sending a chilling message to anyone who might be sent there.

The facility itself is a patchwork of tents and trailers, thrown together in a matter of days.

There’s no pretense of comfort or dignity—just a clear intent to warehouse as many people as possible, as quickly as possible. With a planned capacity of 5,000 detainees, “Alligator Alcatraz” is poised to become one of the largest detention centers in the country.

Who Will Be Sent There?

Administration officials claim the camp is reserved for “the worst of the worst”—migrants with serious criminal convictions.

But the reality is far murkier. The vast majority of people in immigration detention have no criminal record beyond immigration violations or minor infractions.

This facility is less about targeting dangerous criminals and more about ramping up mass deportations, regardless of individual circumstances.

A Humanitarian and Environmental Catastrophe

The decision to build a massive detention camp in one of America’s most fragile ecosystems is reckless in the extreme.

Environmental groups and Indigenous communities have sounded the alarm about the potential damage to the Everglades, but their concerns have been brushed aside in the rush to get the camp operational.

Inside the camp, conditions are already raising red flags.

Rapid construction, lack of permanent infrastructure, and the ever-present threat of wildlife create an environment that is not only unsafe but also deeply dehumanizing for those detained.

A Shameful Chapter in American History

“Alligator Alcatraz” is more than just a new detention center—it’s a glaring symbol of a policy built on fear, spectacle, and disregard for basic human rights.

By placing thousands of vulnerable people in a remote swamp and surrounding them with danger, the administration is sending a clear message: deterrence at any cost, no matter how cruel or absurd.

This is not immigration policy. This is a national disgrace.
