Arizona's Independent Voters Deserve Better
Arizona is one of only a handful of states that does not allow independent voters to participate in primary elections. This is a disenfranchisement of a significant portion of the electorate, as independents now outnumber registered Democrats and Republicans in the state. Independents are forced to choose between voting in the Democratic or Republican primary, even if they don't identify with either party. This is unfair to independent voters, who deserve to have a say in who is nominated for office. In addition to being undemocratic, Arizona's closed primary system also makes it difficult for independent candidates to run for office. Independent candidates are required to collect over 35,000 signatures in order to qualify for the ballot.
