Trump’s Assault on Justice and Free Speech Reaches New Lows
Donald Trump’s relentless attack on the U.S. justice system has reached a disturbing new chapter. After targeting law firms, lawyers, and private citizens who dared to oppose him,
Trump’s administration has now set its sights on a university student exercising his constitutional rights.
Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian graduate student at Columbia University and a lawful U.S. green card holder married to an American citizen, was arrested without charges or due process after participating in an anti-war demonstration on campus.
The protest occurred shortly after Trump publicly attacked the university for being a “hotbed of radicalism.”
Khalil’s only “offense” appears to be exercising his First Amendment rights to free speech and peaceful assembly—rights that are supposed to be protected under the U.S. Constitution.
In an alarming escalation, Trump ally and former ICE director Tom Homan appeared on Fox News and declared, “Absolutely, we can deport him,” when asked about the case—even though Khalil is a legal permanent resident who has committed no crime.
Deporting someone for their political views or peaceful protest is not only unconstitutional but represents a direct assault on the very principles of democracy.
This latest move is part of Trump’s broader campaign to criminalize dissent, silence opposition, and undermine the rule of law.
By targeting students, immigrants, and anyone who dares to speak out against him, Trump is sending a chilling message: no one is safe from his authoritarian agenda.
The United States was founded on principles of free speech, due process, and equal protection under the law.
If we allow these rights to be trampled in cases like this, we risk losing them altogether.
It’s time for Americans to stand up against these blatant abuses of power before it’s too late.
