Arizona's Independent Voters Deserve Better

Arizona is one of only a handful of states that does not allow independent voters to participate in primary elections. This is a disenfranchisement of a significant portion of the electorate, as independents now outnumber registered Democrats and Republicans in the state.

Independents are forced to choose between voting in the Democratic or Republican primary, even if they don't identify with either party. This is unfair to independent voters, who deserve to have a say in who is nominated for office.

In addition to being undemocratic, Arizona's closed primary system also makes it difficult for independent candidates to run for office. Independent candidates are required to collect over 35,000 signatures in order to qualify for the ballot. This is a daunting task, and it effectively serves as a barrier to entry for independent candidates.

Arizona's closed primary system is outdated and undemocratic. It is time for the state to adopt a general primary system, which would allow all voters, regardless of party affiliation, to participate in the nomination process.

A general primary system would give independent voters a voice in who is nominated for office. It would also make it easier for independent candidates to run for office, which would lead to more competition and choice for voters.

Arizona voters can help to make a general primary system a reality by contacting their elected officials and urging them to support legislation to adopt such a system. Voters can also get involved in organizations that are working to reform Arizona's election system.

Here are some ways that Arizona voters can help to work towards one general primary:

Contact your elected officials and urge them to support legislation to adopt a general primary system.

Get involved in organizations that are working to reform Arizona's election system, such as Save Democracy Arizona.

Donate to and volunteer for independent candidates who are running for office.

Spread the word about the importance of one general primary and encourage other voters to get involved.

Arizona's independent voters deserve better. They deserve to have a say in who is nominated for office, and they deserve to have the opportunity to vote for independent candidates. A general primary system would make this possible. It is time for Arizona to join the ranks of other states that have adopted this more democratic and inclusive election system.
