Wireless EV Charging

It is possible to charge automobiles wirelessly, and there are a number of companies and research institutions working on developing and commercializing wireless charging technologies for electric vehicles (EVs).

Here are some of the challenges that need to be addressed before wireless charging can be widely adopted for EVs:

Efficiency: Wireless charging is less efficient than wired charging, meaning that more energy is lost during the charging process. This is because some of the energy is converted into heat as the electric current passes through the coils in the charging pad and the receiver unit under the car.

Alignment: The charging pad and the receiver unit need to be precisely aligned in order for the charging process to work. This can be difficult to achieve if the car is parked on an uneven surface or if it is windy.

Cost: Wireless charging systems are more expensive than wired charging systems. This is because they require more complex electronics and components.

Safety: Wireless charging systems can generate electromagnetic fields (EMFs). It is important to ensure that these EMFs are within safe limits for both humans and animals.

Despite these challenges, there has been significant progress in the development of wireless charging technologies for EVs in recent years. A number of automakers and charging companies have announced plans to commercialize wireless charging systems in the next few years.

Here are some of the companies and research institutions that are working on wireless charging for EVs:

WiTricity

Plugless Power

Qualcomm

Volvo

BMW

Mercedes-Benz

Nissan

Toyota

National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)

In addition to these companies, there are a number of startups and university research groups that are also working on wireless charging technologies for EVs.

It is likely that wireless charging will become more common for EVs in the coming years. As the technology continues to develop and the cost of wireless charging systems decreases, it is likely to become a more attractive option for both consumers and businesses.
