To Resolution Copper Company

As someone who lives in Arizona, I have seen firsthand the damage that copper mining can do to the environment. I have seen tailings piles that cover acres of land and pollute waterways. I have seen forests destroyed to make way for open-pit mines. And I have seen the negative impact that copper mining has had on air quality and human health.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, copper mining is one of the most polluting industries in the world. It can release harmful chemicals into the air, water, and soil. These chemicals can cause a variety of environmental problems, including:

Acid mine drainage: This is a type of water pollution that occurs when sulfide-bearing rocks are exposed to air and water. The sulfides react with oxygen and water to form sulfuric acid, which can pollute waterways and contaminate drinking water.

Heavy metal pollution: Copper mining can release heavy metals such as arsenic, lead, and mercury into the environment. These metals can be toxic to humans and wildlife.

Water pollution: Copper mining can contaminate surface water and groundwater with sediment, chemicals, and heavy metals. This can make water unsafe to drink, swim in, or use for irrigation.

Air pollution: Copper mining can emit dust, sulfur dioxide, and other pollutants into the air. These pollutants can contribute to respiratory problems, heart disease, and cancer.

The environmental damage caused by copper mining is not only a problem in Arizona. It is a problem around the world. In fact, the World Bank has called copper mining "one of the most environmentally destructive industries."

I urge Resolution Copper Company to take steps to mitigate the environmental damage caused by its proposed copper mine. This includes:

Using clean mining technologies that reduce pollution.

Restoring the environment after mining operations are complete.

Compensating local communities for the environmental damage caused by mining.

I believe that copper mining can be done in a way that is environmentally responsible. However, it is important to take steps to prevent the environmental damage that can occur. I hope that Resolution Copper Company will take these steps to protect the environment.
